Accessibility statement

We want everyone to be able to use this website. This page says what we have done, what is not perfect yet, and how to tell us about a problem.

This statement is for the website at www.basildoncts.co.uk, run by Basildon Community Transport Services (BCTS), registered charity 1146853.

Many of the people we help are older or disabled, so this website was built for them first. We want as many people as possible to be able to read it, use it and get in touch, whatever device or help they use.

What we have done

We built the website to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) version 2.2 at level AA. In plain words, that means you should be able to:

  • read every page in large text, up to twice the normal size, without anything being cut off

  • use every page on a phone, with nothing to scroll sideways for

  • get around using only a keyboard, and always see where you are

  • use a screen reader: every picture has a description, every form box has a label, and the headings are in order

  • read the words easily: short sentences, plain English, a clear typeface, and strong contrast between the text and the background

  • phone us from any page with one tap, because the phone number is always in the same place

  • send us a message without solving a puzzle: our forms have no picture tests

  • print the pages you need, such as the FAQs and the opening hours

Nothing moves on its own, nothing flashes, and there are no pop-ups.

How we tested it

Before launch, every page was checked with automatic testing tools, by hand using only a keyboard, with the VoiceOver screen reader on a Mac and an iPhone, at twice the normal text size, on a small phone screen, and with the settings that turn off movement and turn on high contrast. We wrote down the result for every rule in the guidelines. If you would like a copy of that checklist, ask us.

What is not perfect

We know about these things and are working on them:

  • Some documents you can download, such as forms from other organisations, were not made by us and may not work well with a screen reader. If you need the information in another form, ask us and we will help.

  • The map on the Contact page is a picture. The written directions next to it say the same things.

  • Pictures added to news posts by our staff should always have a description. If one is missing, tell us and we will add it.

Tell us about a problem

If any part of this website is hard for you to use, or you need information in another form such as large print or by post, please tell us. We will try to put it right.

If you are not happy with our reply

If you tell us about a problem and you are not happy with how we deal with it, you can contact the Equality Advisory and Support Service (EASS) on 0808 800 0082, or at www.equalityadvisoryservice.com. BCTS is a charity, so the accessibility rules for public bodies do not apply to us by law, but we aim for the same standard because it is the right thing for the people we help.
